How to be a tourist in your own city

Craving a getaway but unable to actually get away? Consider a staycation in your own fair city. No matter what you’re craving, here are some ideas for where to eat, drink, play, and stay right here at home.

      SLEEP

Stay just steps away from the Vancouver Art Gallery at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, an iconic luxury landmark hotel dating back to 1939. For an equally interesting downtown experience, try the EXchange Hotel: it’s housed in a striking glass-panelled skyscraper that was once the Vancouver Stock Exchange building.

      PLAY

Locals often don’t participate in their own city’s most iconic attractions—so why not change that? Walk high above Capilano River on the Capilano Suspension Bridge (which you can get to with free daily shuttles from Canada Place), or head up Grouse Mountain to hike and zipline.

If you want the thrill of adventure without having to brave the elements, try a sojourn through the Canadian Rockies at FlyOver Canada: this immersive, multi-sensory flight simulator dazzles even the naysayers. For those who take to more leisurely activities, retreat to 55 acres of bursting florals at the VanDusen Botanical Garden, or take the afternoon to bike the seawall (it’s popular because it’s awesome), maybe stopping for a game of pitch and putt in the park.

      Pursuit

For a fun day trip, head to the quaint and historic Fort Langley. If you plan accordingly, you can even be there for the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Fest (this year taking place from July 25 to 28). Live music, food trucks, a beer garden—c’mon!

      RELAX

The Fairmont Pacific Rim’s Nordic Spa—offering up relaxation by way of hot tubs, cold plunges, and a cedar plank sauna—is a great place for those looking for a little rest and relaxation. Or there’s Circle Wellness, a swish hot-cold private spa circuit in the middle of Granville Island.

      EAT

Make like a true tourist and peruse the food stalls at Granville Island Public Market, picking up pieces to create a picnic (Benton Brothers Fine Cheese, A Bread Affair, and Oyama Sausage Co. are great places to start). Or head to Gastown and stop for a hipster coffee at Revolver and a decadent pastry at Nemesis. Maybe even grab a cheap, nostalgic beer at The Cambie Pub or an expertly-made cocktail at Pourhouse—you’re on “vacation,” after all.

To really treat yourself, a must-try in Vancouver is the Michelin-starred experience at AnnaLena. This upscale restaurant offers Pacific Northwest cuisine in a refreshingly laid-back atmosphere.

You don’t have to leave home to escape—you just need some free time and an open mind.
