North Vancouver skier Lauren Woolstencroft wins Paralympic gold in standing slalom

      North Vancouver’s Lauren Woolstencroft has won a gold medal in the women’s standing slalom at Vancouver’s 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.

      The 28-year-old alpine skier’s victory today (March 15) at Whistler Creekside gave Canada its second gold medal of this Paralympics.

      Vancouver’s Karolina Wisniewska, took the bronze medal in the same event.

      Andrea Rothfuss of Germany earned the silver.

      Woolstencroft is a 28-year-old electrical engineer who was named the International Paralympic Committee’s athlete of the year in 2006.

      This is Woolstencroft's fourth Paralympic gold and sixth medal.

      Wisniewska, who is 33 years old, now has a total of seven Paralympic medals.

      In 2007, Wisniewska became the first Paralympian to be inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame.

      Woolstencroft's and Wisniewska's results mean Canada has now won a total of six medals at the 2010 Paralympics.
