Since the 1950s, the Maritime Museum of BC has been committed to preserving our province’s maritime heritage and culture. On April 18, the museum will celebrate 69 years with a by-donation community day.

“We first opened our doors on April 18, 1955 on Signal Hill, just outside the gates of the HMC Dockyard in Esquimalt. Since then, the museum has moved to Bastion Square, Humboldt Street, and finally, to our current 744 Douglas Street storefront location,” says Brittany Vis, executive director, in a statement. “If you haven’t visited in years, come see how we’re using our small storefront to our full advantage and support our ongoing efforts to secure a permanent waterfront home.”

The permanent exhibit Detail Beyond Measure features an extensive collection of models, half hulls, name plates, and other historical items—a must-see for nautical enthusiasts. In time for the community day, a new exhibit, No Walk in the Woods: The History of the West Coast Trail, will launch on April 11. The show will focus on the landscape of the southwestern edge of Vancouver Island, once known for being a risky route now transformed into a popular hiking destination.
