We asked five of the city’s finest DJs to name the tracks that will have you shaking away the winter blahs for good.

Ask Your Bartender

With crocuses popping up all over the city, you’ve officially been served notice that it’s time to get out of your apartment and welcome in the spring. A great way to do that is by getting liquored up, which you can do by hitting the clubs and asking for one of the following drinks, recommended by the people who lovingly pour them.

Hot club guide

When the soothsayer told Julius Caesar “Beware the ides of March,” he totally didn’t mean stop partying with your BFF.

DJ Lowdown: Max Ulis

One of the city’s first and leading proponents of British grime and dubstep, producer Max Ulis is pointing the local scene toward its cosmopolitan destiny. Ulis and fellow B.C. beatmakers Taal Mala, Phowa, and Self Evident form SUB OSC, the production crew responsible for a mildly demonic remix of Future Sound of London’s “Stakker Humanoid” on Britain’s Jumpin’ and Pumpin’ label.

Know your history: The Balmoral

From CBGB in New York City to the Smilin’ Buddha Cabaret in Vancouver, the best live-music clubs have been located in neighbourhoods that Charles Bukowski would have loved getting liquored up in. Not that long ago, the Balmoral was the kind of room populated by hard-core barflies, as well as other unfortunates who found themselves on the outside of society looking in. But that’s changed following upgrades to the room that have made it a burgeoning haven for Vancouver hipsters.

Tried & Tested

Just because summer never really happened this year doesn't mean we can't elect a seasonal anthem. Recently, we asked five of the city's best DJs to nominate their candidates.

The Hot List

Well, it's probably too late to get a full refund on your tuition fees, so you might as well enjoy your last few weeks of freedom while you can. And Vancouver's club circuit has plenty to offer in the way of back-to-school parties.

Know your history - the Media Club

For roughly 25 years now, the Media Club has occupied a little space on Cambie Street beneath the Queen Elizabeth Theatre complex. It is a fairly subtle venue, with no flashy sign outside its door and a plain-black interior. But the Media Club is loud. If you want live, local music, it is where you head.

Ask your bartender

Is it time for summer to arrive yet? Because the answer is still probably 'no', that's as good an excuse as any to give up on the backyard, head downtown, and hit the bars, where you'd be wise to ask for one of the following drinks, suggested by the bartenders who lovingly pour them.

DJ Lowdown: John Cougar

Onetime Straight music critic John McFarland is a man of many hats, heading up publicity for Vancouver's premier house label, Nordic Trax, coordinating marketing and booking opportunities for several of the city's best producers and DJs, and promoting concerts under the guise of his 2guerilla venture. On Fridays, he becomes John Cougar, hosting Library Square's Casbah!, a weekly event showcasing local bands and sets from a who's who of rock-and-dance mashup DJs.

Hot List for Vancouver clubs 22 - 22 March 2007

Miami Fashion shows, Caribbean dance, German house parties. Whoever said Vancouver’s nightlife is no fun obviously never read a Georgia Straight Hot List.

DJ Lowdown: Andrew3

This Sunday (March 25), the hipster takeover of Vancouver's nightlife will be made complete, as the gentlemen behind the city's hottest underground weekly (Saturday's Salon Des Bourgeoisie at the Royal Unicorn Cabaret) invade the Caprice for one night only, welcoming France's sizzling-hot Ed Banger Records to town.

Ask your bartender - Spring Cocktails

With spring finally upon us, chances are good you're going through Claritin like a fat kid gobbles up Smarties. Need help forgetting the sneezing, itchy eyes, and nose that seems to run like a broken tap? Well, why not drink your troubles away, starting with one of the following cocktails, recommended by the people who lovingly pour them.

Know your history - Celebrities

Like many Vancouver nightclubs, Celebrities started out as a teetotalling ballroom. On September 24, 1914, Lester Court opened its doors for dance lessons. Then in '33, one of the oldest buildings in the West End changed hands and was renamed the Embassy, which eventually turned into a cabaret. Later on, legend has it the basement housed a mini rhythm-and-blues concert hall.

Tried & Tested

This week’s roundup of the city’s reigning club anthems includes three hypnotic electronic jams and two rap songs from opposite ends of the spectrum. The first is timeless, the other’s completely disposable, but they’re both great.

Ask Your Bartender

With spring here a month early, it’s officially time to come out of hibernation. That means fighting off your inner couch potato and hitting the clubs, where you’d be wise to ask for one of the following drinks, suggested by the bartenders who lovingly pour them.

Vancouver’s hottest clubs

You don’t have to wait till St. Patrick’s Day to check out Vancouver’s hottest clubs. There’s plenty of debauchery to be had between now and the greatest excuse of the year to drink. But remember, if the beer’s green before then, send it back.

DJ Lowdown: Nicky Delgado

Reaching the A-list in Vancouver’s house-music community means being as good a marketer as you are a musician, and on both counts Nicky Delgado rates among the scene’s top talents. After establishing his name in Alberta, the Edmonton native moved here in 2001; since arriving on the West Coast, he’s turned his focus to production, scoring recognition from big-name jocks like Hernan Cattaneo.

Know your history - The Penthouse

Last month, the marquee outside the Penthouse featured a rather odd greeting: “Welcome Heritage Vancouver.” Could it be that local architecture buffs enjoy exotic entertainment as much as Howe Street stockbrokers? Possibly, but the shout-out was more a reflection of the fact that the Penthouse has one of the richest histories of any club in Vancouver.

Hot List

The holidays aren’t strictly for spending beyond your means, waging family wars, and making an ass of yourself at staff Christmas parties. ’Tis also the season for getting monster drunk on sickly-sweet peppermint shooters at any number of local hot spots, all of which have plenty going on this time of year.

DJ Lowdown - James “Kuma” Graham

Left-of-centre electronic music has few champions in Vancouver greater than James “Kuma” Graham—producer, DJ, booking agent, and cohost of CFRO’s Art of Beatz (which airs every Thursday at midnight on 102.7 FM). The latest in Kuma’s long line of projects is Forward, an ongoing series of parties showcasing local artists and dubwise international stalwarts like T-Power and Kode9; the next FWD party is scheduled for New Year’s Eve (details to follow at www.thekonspiracygroup.com/).

Know your history - Doolin’s Irish Pub

If Doolin’s Irish Pub, in the heart of the Granville Street entertainment zone, is proof of anything, it’s that you don’t have to travel across the Atlantic to feel like you’re in Dublin’s Temple Bar district. Before Doolin’s opened at 654 Nelson Street in 2002, the site went through a number of transformations. The building that houses the pub was constructed in 1912 as the classy Barron Hotel. Approximately 10 years later, it changed to the Hotel Belmont.
