Fans weigh in on Judas Priest's Vancouver performance

Iconic U.K. metal gods Judas Priest were at General Motors Place on July 24th, 2008. Here's what a sample of the crowd had to say:

Cop-show themes sparked Kavinsky's arresting electro

In 1984, two major events occurred that shaped Parisian electro producer Vincent Belorgey's life: in America, Miami Vice made its television premiere, and in France, nine-year-old Belorgey (aka Kavinsky) quit taking piano lessons for good. Those two historical incidents intersect in the Frenchman's songs, which sound like a musical neophyte's best stab at remaking Jan Hammer's synthetic score for the fabled Florida-based cop show.

Trentemøller's tracks have an anxious undercurrent

No matter how long he keeps making music, it's hard to believe Anders Trentemøller will create a better eight minutes than he did with his 2005 remix of Röyksopp's "What Else Is There?". A note-perfect union of goth-pop theatrics and nerd-techno detailing, that track established the Danish producer as one of dance music's premier remixers.

Granville Island launches public consultation process

One of the classic ways to spend a Vancouver summer day is a stroll around Granville Island. It's always bustling with activity, food, shops, bikes, cars, kids, and tourists (not to mention birds too). It's been a real success story and something people visiting me from out of town always want to go check out. It's so very Vancouver.

Rayman Raving Rabbids

On a nice summer's day, while picnicking with some froglike friends, Rayman is kidnapped by a massive mechanical "rabbid". Thrown into an arena, he competes in a host of mini games, trying to win toilet plungers, which are trophies in this bizarre world. These mini games vary from the simple (move the Wii Remote and Nunchuk in time with music) to the more complicated (aiming and firing plungers at the "raving rabbids"), and while you'll master some quickly, others will infuriate you.

The Police: Unbelievably lame

Our own Steve Newton gave us a pretty good, if not exactly rhapsodic, review of the Police's tour kick-off show on May 28. Apparently things went downhill fast after that triumphant start, at least according to Stewart Copeland, who posted the view from the drumstool on his Web site's forum.

Passionate logic

Composer Bradshaw Pack models his Madonna in the Banana Leaves on musical icons of the past. You might think that Bradshaw Pack's penchant for setting his own compositions next to those by past masters is a sign of arrogance–or, at the very least, an opportunity for hubris to strike. But as the Vancouver-based musician's Palimpsest showed, Pack is really more concerned with putting his idols into a contemporary context while acknowledging their influence on his career.

Sheryl Crow comes clean about ass wiping

Sheryl Crow was reported to have come up with a number of ideas to save the environment, including limiting the amount of toilet paper people can use and designing a detachable "dining sleeve" that people could use instead of a napkin.

Mew ripped off

Perusing Mew's MySpace blog today, I came across this line from the band's singer, Jonas Bjerre: "Thank you for all your messages and emails regarding the Norwegian tv ad featuring a rip-off of Comforting Sounds. It is being addressed."

Gwen Stefani should be celebrated for her music

The Georgia Straight hits an all-time low every time it prints Deena Cox’s sensationalistic objectification of women [“Stefani is queen of MILFdom”, Dec. 7-14]. What does Gwen Stefani’s muff have to do with her music? Where are the female staff at this paper? Why is Deena Cox still publishing?

We're back!

The Georgia Straight music blog has returned. We have plenty to catch up on (and I have to figure out how to use this new system), but I'll start by posting an oldie by one of my favourite bands.

U.K.'s global-minded Gomez gets personal

How We Operate, the band's latest, isn't about melting icecaps. But, based on Gomez's output, it's not a huge leap to find out that the group is more concerned about the environment than your average rock act, British or North American.

Flying high again

Hung-over as he might be, Andrew Bird is feeling pretty good about life when the Georgia Straight catches up with him just outside of Los Angeles. The singer-violinist-guitarist confesses to being a little out of it, something he blames on the mild debauchery of the night before. Headlining the City of Angels’ Henry Fonda Theater, the Chicago-based iconoclast found himself performing for and hanging out with friends that he hadn’t seen in years.
