Project8 Film Festival reaches out

Now in its third year, the Project8 Film Festival—on Friday and Saturday (August 8 and 9) at the VIVO Media Arts Centre (1965 Main Street)—has expanded from its boot-camp roots and gone national. “We put a call out for submissions that are similar to our mandate of DIY—do it yourself,” said festival spokesperson Julie Saragosa over the phone. “So there will be a number of films from across Canada as well.”

Out on Screen was one of 16 cultural organizations that received funding from Arts Partners in Creative Development, as announced on July 17. The LGBT society will receive $65,000 to commission three short films and a community-based installation for its Queer History Project. Nine artists involved in the projects include director Gwen Haworth (She’s a Boy I Knew ) and director Aerlyn Weissman (Little Sister’s vs. Big Brother ).

In an effort to provide better support to Canadian film festivals and professional development activities, Telefilm Canada has restructured its funding programs. The Canada Showcase Program has been replaced by two new programs: the Festivals Performance Program (with about $1.2 million in funding per year) for festivals with audiences larger than 100,000 people, and the Skills and Screens Program (with about $2.5 million in funding per year) for smaller festivals and professional-development activities.

Syd Field, one of four Hollywood screenwriting instructors who will be appearing at the Screenwriters Summit at the Vancouver International Film Centre this weekend (June 7 and 8), says that the craft of screenwriting today reflects social changes caused by technological advances. “I really firmly believe that the impact of technology, whether it be CGI or wireless technology, is really influencing the way we think and the way we tell stories visually,” Field said on the line from L.A.
