Hip-hop beefs, Volume 38: Ice T versus Soulja Boy

Over the past week, there has been a little verbal battle between Ice-T and Soulja Boy and not in the fun freestyle battle kind of way, but in an immature YouTube-video kind of way. Ice-T apparently doesn’t like Soulja Boy’s music, and says that Soulja Boy is killing hip-hop. (He makes some good points).

Soulja Boy then responded to Ice-T by calling him old and saying that he has lost touch with how hip-hop is changing. (Also some good points.)

Ice-T then kind of apologizes to Soulja Boy.

Kanye West has also put his two cents in by defending Soulja Boy, saying his music is what hip-hop is supposed to be.

I have been a fan of hip-hop since elementary school, and there have been so many feuds between its stars throughout the years: Tupac versus Notorious B.I.G; Ice Cube versus NWA; Jay-Z versus Nas; Jermaine Dupri versus Dr. Dre; 50 Cent versus Ja Rule; 50 Cent versus Cam'ron; 50 Cent versus P Diddy; 50 Cent versus The Game; 50 Cent versus Young Buck; Common versus Ice Cube; DMX versus the law. The list goes on…. There is so much drama that a soap opera could be made called, “The Days of our Rhymes.”

Most music on the radio is corny, predictable, and boring, but that’s what radio mostly is and has been; just songs with catchy tunes. Why should hip-hop be any different? Soulja Boy’s “Crank that” song is just a fun, silly radio song. I love hip-hop, but I usually hate radio hip-hop unless I am in the mood for some upbeat music with little-to-no depth.

There is still good stuff, with some MCs saying something other than how much “ice” they have or how much money they “gots”, such as the Roots, Little Brother, Lupe Fiasco, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Common, or Talib Kweli. You just have to look past radio and do a little searching.

Ice-T just sounds like a cranky old man. On the other hand, I'll give Soulja Boy props when he comes up with something as good as this:

There's nothing more epic than a has-been calling out a never-was.
