Anti-anti-carbon tax lobby ups ante

Business owners, economists, and faith groups are about to up the ante in opposition to the B.C. NDP-led opposition to Premier Gordon Campbell’s carbon tax.

According to a media release issued today by Kevin Washbrook, cofounder of Kits-based group Voters Taking Action on Climate Change, representatives from the respective groups are meeting today at 2 p.m. at Upholstery Arts, located at 2430 Burrard Street. Washbrook is using the slogan “The climate change crisis is bigger than politics.”

On May 29, the final day of the legislative session, the B.C. Liberals rammed Bill 37 through the legislature with no debate. However, the NDP had already decided that it would oppose the tax.

The vote also saw Vision Vancouver mayoral nominee Gregor Robertson oppose the tax, even though he told the Straight that he was in favour of a carbon tax in principle, but that B.C. Finance Minister Carole Taylor’s had several “inadequacies”.
