Religious boycotts spur The Love Guru's flaccid box office performance

Never underestimate the power of religion. And don't mock it either.

That should be the lesson that Mike Myers learns from the poor box office performance of The Love Guru, which only turned in $14 million, which didn't meet the $20 million it was predicted to rake in (in comparison, Get Smart got smart with $40 million on the same opening weekend).

Part of the The Love Guru's failure can be attributed to the organized boycott and protest by religious groups.

Hindus in India and across North America claim the movie mocks Hinduism, and organized a campaign against the film.

But it's not just Hindus that were offended. Catholic Bishops also found the film's content morally offensive and vulgar, and even a Jewish rabbi has been calling for a boycott for its ridicule of faith.

Undoubtedly, the film would best be advised to cancel its forthcoming release in India.
