Perennial Critical Mass participant Steve Kisby told the Straight that the June 27 bicycle ride drew “over 2,000 participants”.
Kisby, a Vancouver resident, said he consulted fellow riders in order to arrive at that number, and most agreed it involved 2,000 at a minimum. This means the ride broke the previous record, eclipsing the more than 1,800 cyclists of June 2006.
Critical Mass events take place on the last Friday of every month, rain or shine. The latest ride marked the end of the city’s annual Bike Month. Cyclists of all shapes, sizes, and speeds formed a huge snake that weaved a path through downtown.
The ride lasted close to four hours, taking up all of the eastbound lanes of the Georgia Viaduct and the southbound lanes of the Granville Bridge, and executing a total takeover of the Lions Gate Bridge.
