Sunday matinees: film festival and movie club

With the sun shining and temperatures rising, you not want to spend an afternoon inside a movie theatre. On the other hand, those very same reasons may make you want to hide in the comfort of an air conditioned theatre, if it's hot and muggy.

This Sunday (July 6), the Impromptu Film Festival will be showcasing a number of short films from around the world that you may not have the chance to see otherwise.

It's also for a good cause. Proceeds will help fund selected projects in development and a quarter of the proceeds will help create a UBC Film Production Scholarship.

Films that will be shown this year include Academy Award winner The Danish Poet, Academy Award nominee Madame Tutli-Putli, Leo Award winner Centigrade, and more.

There will be two sets of films, one from 12:30 p.m., and the second from 3:15 p.m., at Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour).

Tickets are $15 for one set of shows, or $20 for both shows.

For other summer afternoon cinematic experiences, in North Vancouver, the eatery Bella Candela has a movie club that organizes events that include viewing a movie matinée at Empire Esplanade Theatre and then back to the restaurant for drinks and tapas.

There's one this Sunday (July 6) that starts at 1:45 p.m. at Bella Candela. Tickets are $25 (and include movie admission, a glass of wine or cocktail, and tapas).

Visit the club Web page for more details.
