Hip-Hop Karaoke is coming to town

The city’s hip-hop heads have a new place to show and prove come December 7 with the launch of Hip Hop Karaoke at Fortune Sound Club (147 East Pender Street). Organizer Paul Gibson-Tigh told the Straight he got the idea in his native Toronto, where such events happen regularly.

“It was super entertaining to watch all these unassuming people perform,” said the UBC grad. “There were also some really sick emcees who got up and just killed classic tracks.”

Gibson-Tigh anticipates about 30 performers, broken down into “sets” of four or five people each. Hype men are welcome, and a live DJ will spin their instrumentals of choice, though he stresses the importance of registering via hhkvancouver@gmail.com.

“We know lots of people are going to show up and ask to do tracks that we don’t have instrumentals for, so we need to have them locked down beforehand. Diggin’ in them crates takes time!”
