Giant banner unfurled in protest of South Fraser Perimeter Road's climate impact

The banner was set up at River Road and Centre Street in Delta.

By Stephen Hui,

Protesters unfurled today (April 25) a giant banner reading "Climate Action Now!" in Delta near the Alex Fraser Bridge.

The activists from GatewaySucks.org and the Council of Canadians were expressing their opposition to the South Fraser Perimeter Road, which would run through the land on which they staged their action.

The planned four-lane, 40-kilometre-long highway from Delta to Surrey is part of the B.C. government's Gateway Program.

Critics say the highway-expansion program will increase greenhouse-gas emissions and destroy farmland and wildlife habitats along the Fraser River.

Today's protest coincided with the Pilgrimage to Burns Bog, which saw supporters of the wetland walk from Annacis Island to the Delta Nature Reserve.

Someone should tell these people that more greenhouse gas emissions are the result of idling than driving from point to point.

Too bad they feel it necessary to censure any discussion about rapid transit.

"Please give a link, page number, document showing that the Canada Line costs $25 per ride. Approximately 100,000 people ride the Canada line per day, which means roughly 36 million per year. Let's reduce this to 30 million per year to account for lower ridership on weekends and holidays. 30 million * 25 per ride = 750 million per year. My BS detector is telling me that this number is figure is ridiculous. "

Jeff said "...more greenhouse gas emissions are the result of idling..."

Even the proponent's own documents admit that this project will result in a net increase of ghg emissions of over 160,000 per year.

There has never been a highway expansion project that resulted in ghg emissions going down.

"...necessary to censure..."

Not sure what you mean by this. The comment you quote along with many comments from different view points are still up on their website.

^they did censure, some comments are missing...
Fortunately, not this one, there others out there on other blogs that go into more detail...

"Yes we should be more than skeptical of numbers throw without verifiable source supporting them. What is at play here is pure and simple disinformation under the disguise of "expert" source that no-one is able to verify.

It is exactly the same method Climate change deniers are using.
It was exactly the same method Bush has used to justify invasion of Irak...

Today, Mezzanine, Ron Smelser, Snowy, MB, and other have either challenged this number or asked for source.

All their comments has been purely and simply discarded. Why?

The author of this blog can do whatever he wants, but you can guess what can be my opinion on his methods and more generally ethic..."
