Video: Vancouver's Non-Partisan Association discusses past and future at AGM

One wall of the meeting room bore some fitting words for the occasion.

Did you miss the Non-Partisan Association's annual general meeting last night (April 28)?

While Vision Vancouver was celebrating its control of city hall at the British Columbia Institute of Technology's downtown campus, about 70 NPA members were gathered at the Museum of Vancouver to talk about their party's identity and future.

Former NPA councillor and mayoral candidate Peter Ladner, former NPA mayor Philip Owen, and Green park board commissioner Stuart Mackinnon were among those seen at the meeting.

Here's some video highlights.

Former NPA councillor Elizabeth Ball shares her thoughts on the debate over potentially changing the 73-year-old party's name.

NPA members vote to have their board of directors form a committee to suggest new names for the party. Debate turns to another motion, which ultimately failed, to have the NPA come up with "ongoing general policy directions".

Members argue that what distinguishes the NPA from the others is it's not actually a party and it doesn't make policy. But former councillor Peter Ladner tells the AGM, "We've got to change." Ladner says it's time to admit the NPA is, in fact, a party.

NPA councillor Suzanne Anton tells members that Vision Vancouver "thinks small" and has "failed us". "This great city comes from generations of good NPA decision-making," she says.

NPA park board commissioner Ian Robertson gives Green commissioner Stuart Mackinnon a shout-out for attending the AGM. Robertson says Vision is "whittling away" the independence of the park board, and he's convinced there's a plot to "do away" with the body.

NPA school trustee Carol Gibson tells the AGM that Vancouver still has a great public education system. Gibson says the Vision-dominated school board has taken to "advocacy on steroids" and is "unable to make decisions".
