Vancouver International Children's Festival moves to Granville Island

By Janet Smith,

Don't look for those familiar tents to pop up in Vanier Park next spring.

The Vancouver International Children's Festival has just announced it's moving to Granville Island from the park, its location for more than three decades.

The decision is the result of a strategic planning process held over the past year.

"After 33 years in Vanier Park, it was certainly with great deliberation that we made this decision," said fest chair Paul Dumontet in a press statement.

The move reflects a slight change in focus for the organization towards more arts-based programming: Granville Island's technically equipped venues will allow them to present more "challenging artistic work", a press release stated.

But cost savings are also a factor for the group, which has struggled with deficits over recent years. By using existing venues at the new site, it eliminates the need to pay to erect tents and build venues at the park.

The fest also sees opportunities to draw new audiences at the busy island, a factor that has also drawn events like the Vancouver International Fringe Festival to the location.

Although not stated in the announcement, weather has also been a factor with turnout to the outdoor festival, and Granville Island offers more cover.

The kids' fest launches at its new location May 30 to June 5, 2011.

But will it be fun?
Granville Island notoriously crack down on buskers and outdoor performances. I was down there this Saturday and I could barely tell that the Fringe was on. Other than a few lineups at venues, their footprint on the island was extremely small -- a real shame when you compare it to similar fests in Edmonton or Winnipeg that have a whole shwack of free outdoor fun.

So the real question remains -- will CMHC allow GI to get festive for the Children's Festival, or will they try and muzzle it to appease the merchants and their precious parking spots?
