David Eby and his supporters had gathered inside the NDP candidate’s campaign office on West Broadway as polls in the Vancouver-Point Grey by-election closed at 8 p.m. today (May 11).

Eby, well-known for his work as B.C. Civil Liberties Association executive director, is challenging Premier Christy Clark in the by-election.

Clark was elected B.C. Liberal leader on February 26 but does not have a seat in the legislature.

Eby said he came into the race knowing he was an underdog against Clark, but said the community has responded to his grassroots campaign.

“It’s so tight that every vote is going to count I think,” he told the Straight as he awaited preliminary vote results.

B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix was also present at Eby’s campaign office to show support.

Earlier in the evening Eby backers did some last-minute rallying, standing in the rain with “Honk for Eby” and “Vote” signs at a busy intersection a few blocks from the campaign office. Drivers sounded their horns as they passed.

The other by-election candidates include the Green party’s Francoise Raunet, B.C. First’s Danielle Alie, Independent William Gibbens, and Independent Eddie Petrossian.

Nice to see they finally acknowledged the other candidates who are running besides Clark and Eby

It is amazing how quickly Canadians/Vancouverites forget -- Christy Clarke was a terrible Education Minister, she made awful mistakes for which she took no responsibility, instead ducking out and leaving parents and teachers to clean up her mess, and now she is back, with what credentials one might ask? As a PAC rep during her reign I was amazed at her total lack of interest in talking to parents, refusing to meet with us or listen to us. I fear BC is in for a rough ride. It is disappointing to say the least when politicians run rough-shod over the electorate and are not held accountable -- we have a prime minister who has no regard for parliamentary law and a premier who has a questionable past re BC rail and proven poor judgement in her portfolio; and yet they are returned to office. No wonder so many of us have lost faith in this system.
