A new lunch delivery service for downtown Vancouver launched Tuesday (May 1). Bites on Bikes is a program created by the H.A.V.E. Culinary Training Society, an organization in the Downtown Eastside that provides job skills and work opportunities in the food services industry to individuals who experience barriers to employment.

Bites on Bikes provides lunch boxes—which include a gourmet sandwich, a homemade cookie, fresh fruit, and a San Pellegrino beverage—prepared in the H.A.V.E. kitchen (374 Powell Street). The lunch boxes are delivered on Shift Delivery electric cargo bikes to businesses operating downtown.

Sandwiches include Montreal smoked meat, with Swiss cheese, Dijon mustard, and rye bread; turkey and Provolone, which also includes cranberry and lettuce; roasted vegetable, which includes red peppers, zucchini, red onion, spinach, tomato, Provolone, and mayo; ham and Provolone, which includes lettuce, tomato, mayo, and mustard; roast beef and Swiss, which includes lettuce, tomato, and Dijon mustard; tuna salad, which includes lettuce, onion, and Dijon mustard; and salami and bocconcini, which includes fresh basil.

Lunch orders must be placed by 3 p.m. the day before by email or telephone, or on the Bites on Bikes website. Each lunch box costs $12, but a minimum order of $40 is required for delivery service. All proceeds benefit the H.A.V.E. Culinary Training Society.
