An independent young company led the large-theatre category at the 30th annual Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards tonight (June 25) at the Commodore Ballroom.

Patrick Street Productions' The Light in the Piazza won four Jessies for set design, music and musical direction, lighting design, and outstanding production.

But the Arts Club Theatre Company took home a higher total of awards, with productions in both large and small categories this year. It earned five Jessies, three for the large section, and two for the small.

In the small-theatre category, Electric Company dominated, winning six awards for All the Way Home.

And the acting star of the night was Meg Roe, who was recognized in both large and small categories for her outstanding performances in The Penelopiad and All the Way Home.

In other categories, the late Jim Green received the Georgia Straight patron of the arts award; Andrée Karas won the Mary Phillips Prize for Behind-the-Scenes Achievement; Rachel Peake won the Ray Michal Prize for Emerging Director; Antony Lipovetsky (of the show Flop!) won the Sam Payne Award for the Most Promising Newcomer; Craig Holzschuh won the John Moffatt & Larry Lillo Award; Patricia Smith and Kevin Cockell won the Colin Campbell Award for Excellence in Technical Theatre; set designer Pam Johnson won the GVPTA Career Achievement Award; and Meghan Gardiner won the Sydney Risk prize.
