Now that the sun is finally shining in Vancouver, it’s time for some ice cream. If you’re hankering for gelato, know that our city has some of the world’s best.

At this year’s Firenze Gelato Festival in May, James Coleridge, owner of Bella Gelateria (1001 West Cordova Street) competed with 30 gelato makers from Italy and around the world. His pecan and Canadian maple syrup gelato (noce pecan e sciroppo d’acero Canadese) was awarded first prize by the technical panel.

Coleridge’s gelato also won the people’s choice award. Over 200,000 visitors attended the festival in Florence and could vote for this award. Two Florentine gelato makers placed second and third.

Bravissima, Bella Gelateria! I agree entirely with those perceptive Florentine judges. It's those (not often seen) small vertical centrifuges that produce the dense creaminess. Yum-mo!

Vancouver may have lost most liveability city in the world (according to The Economist Intelligence Unit) but we have the best gelato!
