Wallflower Modern Diner makes PETA's top-five vegan mac 'n' cheese list

If you ever needed an excuse to celebrate a specific food item or dish, the U.S. probably already has a “holiday” for that. For instance, today (July 6) is National Fried Chicken Day, July 15 is National Tapioca Pudding Day, and July 25 is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day. Hell, if you wanted to eat beans all month, July is National Baked Beans Month (it’s apparently also National Hot Dog Month and National Ice Cream Month, so grab a bottle of Pepto-Bismol and go nuts!).

Since Saturday (July 7) is National Macaroni Day (and National Strawberry Sundae Day), the folks at PETA have come up with a list of the top-five vegan mac and cheese dishes. Even though National Macaroni Day is really an American “holiday”, a Vancouver restaurant’s animal-free dish comes in at number three.

The Wallflower Modern Diner (2420 Main Street)—which won Golden Plates 2012 awards for Most Vegan-Friendly, Best Comfort Food, and Best Gluten-Free Dining—welcomes omnivores, vegetarians, vegans, and those with speciality diets, like gluten-free. Their mac 'n' cheesey ($11) entrée combines macaroni with vegan cheddar and almond milk. If you’re looking to really indulge, you can top the dish with chopped vegan hot-dogs for an additional $2.

Other restaurants rounding out PETA’s top-five vegan macaroni and cheese list include Florida’s Soul Vegetarian Restaurant and Sublime Restaurant and Bar, Utah’s City Cakes and Café, and Massachusetts’s Belmont Vegetarian.

Baked beans have their own month?
      But of course.
Really good baked beans (with five kinds of beans, slow-simmered hot peppers, chipotle seasoning, and smoked ham hock) are the summer's ultimate side dish and take an entire month to prepare properly.
(Of course, that last ingredient takes them out of vegan consideration, but it can be omitted.)
