The Pattullo Bridge, which links Surrey and New Westminster across the Fraser River, is to be closed to all traffic over a weekend in mid-August for repair work, TransLink says.

According to a news release today (August 1) from TransLink, the closure is expected to take place from Friday, August 17, at 9 p.m. to Monday, August 20, at 3 a.m., as long as weather conditions are suitable.

“This is to allow re-paving of a portion of the 75-year-old bridge where damage to the asphalt pavement at the south end has become a safety concern,” TransLink said in the release. "The closure is to allow the work to be performed safely and with minimal disruption to traffic.”

“The work will depend on the weather, as asphalt requires dry conditions to dry and cure. If there is rain heavier than showers, the work will be postponed until the following weekend.”

During the closure, motorists are advised to use alternate routes across the Fraser River such as the Alex Fraser Bridge, the Port Mann Bridge, or the Queensborough Bridge.

The Pattullo Bridge, built in 1937, is owned and operated by TransLink.
