Last-second field goal lifts B.C. Lions to victory in Winnipeg

It was an ugly night of football, but the result looked a whole lot better to the B.C. Lions than it did to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Paul McCallum booted a 41-yard field goal as time expired to push the Leos past the Bombers 20-17 on Friday night in the Manitoba capital.

The Lions led 10-0 at halftime and appeared to be on their way to another show of defensive force, but quarterback Travis Lulay struggled for much of the second half. He threw a pair of interceptions that allowed the Bombers to get back in the game and, in fact, take the lead at 14-10.

An Andrew Harris touchdown with just over two minutes remaining put B.C. back in front 17-14 setting up a kicking contest in the final minute. Winnipeg managed to convert a 32-yard field goal to tie things at 17-17 with 31 seconds left on the clock. But Lulay found Geroy Simon on the right sideline in Blue Bomber territory as time wound down setting the stage for McCallum to kick the winning points at the final whistle.

With their fourth straight victory, the Lions improve to 6-2 on the season while the Bombers fall to 2-6. B.C. now faces the Montreal Alouettes in a home-and-home series beginning next Friday (August 31st) back east with the return match set for September 8 at B.C. Place Stadium.
