Cee-Lo, Cee-Lo Green... Is The Soul Machine (Arista)

After receiving much praise for his 2002 debut solo album, Cee-Lo Green And His Perfect Imperfections, the multitalented artist known as Cee-Lo once again dips into an assortment of musical genres, extracting the most memorable element of each and balling them together into Cee-Lo Green... Is The Soul Machine.

On "The Art Of Noise"í‚ í‚ the first full-length song on the albumí‚ í‚ Cee-Lo recruits the masterful production team the Neptunes. Over a jazzed-up piano snippet from Burton Cummings's "These Eyes", the exí‚ Goodie Mobber blends funk and gospel, half-singing and half-rapping soulful lines like "God can truly work a miracle/Look at me, isn't it obvious that I'm one?"

The record heads in a different direction with "The One", a bass-heavy number with a tinge of Southern-flavoured crunk-lite. Just short of a club banger, the jam takes Cee-Lo's humble crooning ("It's a privilege to have made you laugh/It's a privilege to have crossed your path") then counterbalances it with rapper T.I. rants about bitches, chrome, minks, and gator belts. Showcasing his singing ability, the Atlanta native then pulls another U-turn with "Let's Stay Together", a Neptunes-helmed, jazzy love ballad.

With a multitude of styles and influences this time out, Cee-Lo showcases even more of the diversity he displayed on Perfect Imperfections. He's been compared to OutKast's André 3000, but he's got a refreshing originality that's undeniably his own.
