Fall Arts Preview: comedy superstars and local upstarts keep the laughs coming in Metro Vancouver

      From international comedy superstar Ricky Gervais at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre to up-and-coming local comics at the Biltmore Cabaret, Vancouver offers a multitude of ways to get your laugh on this fall.

      Monty Python's Spamalot at the White Rock Playhouse, to October 3. The White Rock Players' Club presents a musical inspired by the classic comedy film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, with books and lyrics by Eric Idle, and music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle.

      Craig Conant at Rick Bronson's House of Comedy, September 9 to 12: Conant is a standup comedian and host of the podcast Community Service with Craig Conant. According his official bio, Conant is "sober now despite the look on his face. Born in Los Angeles to a Mexican mother and an angry white father, growing up there was a lot of baseball and illegal fireworks." As a standup comic Conat has shared the stage with Chris D'elia, Bobby Lee, Theo Von, and Michael Yo.

      Jokes Please! at Little Mountain Gallery, September 9, 16, and 23. Standup-comedy show hosted by Ross Dauk and featuring comedians from Just For Laughs, Netflix, and CBC's The Debaters.

      The Scrawny Show at the Anza Club. Standup comedy show every second and fourth Thursday features performances by Soda Fountain (September 9), Andrea Jin (September 23), Ivan Decker (October 7), and Sophia Johnson (October 21).

      Brad Williams at the Rio Theatre, September 10 (two shows). American standup comedian and actor, cohost of the About Last Night podcast with comedian/actor Adam Ray. Born with achondroplasia, Williams is known for his Showtime comedy specials Brad Williams: Fun Size and Brad Williams: Daddy Issues.

      David and Ken's Comedy with Music at Havana Theatre, September 11. Local comedians David Milchard and Ken Lawson host an audience-fueled conversational comedy show with real stories, character-driven improv scenes, and spontaneous songs with ripping guitar solos.

      Jessiemae Peluso plays Rick Bronson's House of Comedy from September 16 to 18.

      Comedy Night in Surrey at the White Hart Pub, September 17. Yuk Yuk's touring comedian Byron Bertram performs an uncensored standup comedy show, with guest Ryan Lachance.

      Comedy Pants at the China Cloud, September 18. Alistair Ogden and An-Te Chu bring you a new lineup of their favourite Vancouver comedians at a monthly standup comedy show.

      Funday in the Neighbourhood at Havana Theatre, September 19. Local actor and comedian John Hannah explores the ins, outs, peoples, places, vibes, moods, and talents from around the neighbourhood at a show cohosted by a skeleton puppet named Slappy and musician Tyson.

      Kate Quigley at Rick Bronson's House of Comedy, September 23 to 26: Quigley is a standup comedian, podcaster, host, and actress known as the “up for anything” star of Playboy TV's Undercover. She's also noted for bikini-crashing formal events. She hosts the podcast #DateFails and her livestream show The Hollywood Pool Party. She is a regular at the Improv, Laugh Factory, Icehouse, Comedy Store, and Haha Comedy Club in Hollywood.

      Jonny Paul at 12 Kings on September 24. Stand-up comedian Jonny Paul headlines a standup comedy show that also features Kwasi Thomas, Byron Bertram, and Justin Nichol.

      Brunch: A Comedy Show at Little Mountain Gallery, September 25, 8 pm. Vancouver comedians Kerri Donaldson and Allie Entwistle present an improv and sketch-comedy show. The duo has performed at Toronto Sketchfest, Smash Comedy Festival, JFL Northwest, and in their apartments.

      Roast Battle at Little Mountain Gallery, September 25, 10 pm. Comedy-roast competition hosted by Kody Audette and John Cullen.

      Comedy Here Often? at the Hollywood Theatre, September 27. Phil Hanley, a regular at New York City's Comedy Cellar, headlines a night of comedy hosted by Kevin Banner that also features Vancouver comic Yumi Nagashima.

      Spenny of Kenny vs. Spenny fame plays Fortune Sound Club on September 28.

      Vancouver Improv Festival at the Cultch, October 12 to 17. Six days of improv comedy shows and workshops.

      Ms. Pat at Rick Bronson's House of Comedy, October 17. American standup comedian, writer, and actress, known for The Ms. Pat Show, and host of the podcast The Patdown with Ms. Pat.

      Ricky Gervais at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, October 17 and 18. English standup comedian, actor, director, producer, and writer, best known for co-creating the British television mockumentary sitcom The Office. Gervais has won five British Comedy Awards, two Emmy Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards, and has also hosted the Golden Globes five times. CANCELLED.

      Scaredy Cat Cabaret at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, October 18. Eight Vancouver-based performers come together to share their stories of what freaks them out the most.

      Lara Beitz at Rick Bronson's House of Comedy, October 28 to 31. American standup comedian and actor, Beitz is a regular performer at the Comedy Store in L.A. and has appeared on Comedy Central's Lights Out with David Spade.

      Erik Griffin performs at Rick Bronson's House of Comedy from November 4 to 7.

      Ophira Eisenberg at the Norman & Annette Rothstein Theatre, November 10. Canadian-born, New York-based stand-up comedian, storyteller, and writer, host of NPR's comedy and trivia show Ask Me Another, performs as part of the Chutzpah! Festival.

      Hasan Minhaj at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, November 14. American comedian, writer, actor, and political commentator, former correspondent for The Daily Show and host of Netflix's Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, performs his new solo show, The King’s Jester, in a return to his storytelling roots. SOLD OUT.

      Max Amini at the Orpheum Theatre, November 18. Pulling from his Persian upbringing, Amini blends social trends, cultural references, and side-splitting impressions. This event is 16+ (younger individuals are allowed at the discretion of their parents).

      The Mixtape at the Biltmore Cabaret, November 19. Showcase of local comedians features standup by Alisha Dhillon, Amanda Smith, Amber Harper-Young, Ed Konyha, Jake Spencer, K.C. Novak, Kevin von Helvete, Kwasi Thomas, Robert Peng, and Taylor Moorey. The performance will be released as a concert film and documentary about the trials of Canadian amateur comedy.

      Mark Normand at Rick Bronson's House of Comedy, November 20. American standup comedian and actor, cohost of a weekly podcast Tuesdays with Stories with fellow comedian Joe List. Normand has numerous appearances on TV's Conan and the hugely popular podcast The Joe Rogan Experience.

      Avi Liberman at the Norman and Annette Rothstein Theatre, November 20. Israeli-American standup comedian performs as part of the 21st annual Chutzpah! Festival.

      Iris Bahr plays the Norman & Annette Rothstein Theatre on November 23.

      God is a Scottish Drag Queen: The Christmas Special at Evergreen Cultural Centre, December 4 and 5. Comedian Mike Delamont is back for a very special retelling of the Christmas Story--right from God themselves!

      Last Podcast on the Left at the Chan Centre, December 9. Hosts Ben Kissel, Marcus Parks, and Henry Zebrowski host a comedic take on all things macabre, covering dark subjects spanning Jeffrey Dahmer, werewolves, Jonestown, and iconic hauntings.
