This show has quite literally been a decade in the making.

Lauren Brevner and James Nexw’Kalus-Xwalacktun Harry have been artistic collaborators since 2014. Under the name KWÍKWI, they are finally showing their first-ever solo exhibition, which opens at Or Gallery today (October 13).

The Seventh runs at the East Pender artist-run space until February 10, 2024 and promises to be an immersive multidisciplinary experience spanning sculpture, painting, carving, and light.

Brevner’s work explores her Japanese and Trinidadian heritage, and Harry’s dives into traditional Sḵwx̱wú7mesh histories and iconographies. In their joint practise, KWÍKWI spans cultures, political and social views, and spiritual practices to create contemporary pieces—which range from large public installations to more solitary works—that foster relationships, community, and the beauty of intersectionality.

The Seventh marks a pivotal moment in the artists’ decade-long collaborative practice,” says Jenn Jackson, director of Or Gallery and curator of the exhibition, in a statement. “The discursive project builds upon the artists’ significant contributions to intersectional conversations around Indigenous representation and land-based gestures in contemporary art.”

Each piece in the exhibition is being shown to the public for the first time. Looking for something to do on a rainy weekend? You just found it.
