Whenever the Canucks take to the ice for an NHL playoff game, the energy is palpable in the team’s home city.

Whether it’s seeing everyone in their hockey jerseys, hearing the honks when they score, or Trankslink flashing “GO CANUCKS GO” on the front of its buses, one thing is for sure: we’re a city of Canuckleheads. Especially now that we’re in round two.

While plenty of sports bars, restaurants, and lounges will be playing the upcoming games against the Edmonton Oilers, the City of Vancouver wanted to get in on the fun by offering free viewing events suitable for all ages.

Starting May 12, Oak Meadow Park will be hosting Playoffs in the Park in partnership with the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Park Board. This family-friendly viewing party will allow up to 2,000 fans to watch the games on the big screen (don’t worry: there will be portable washrooms and sanitation services onsite). As part of a pilot program, additional viewing areas may be added for future games depending on public interest. There are also plans for a licensed public viewing experience at the PNE, capable of hosting 6,000 people, starting with round three of the playoffs—if the Canucks continue their winning streak, that is.

"The playoffs are all about bringing people together,” shares Mayor Ken Sim in a statement. “Whether you’re a die-hard fan or getting swept up in the Canucks spirit for the first time, head to Oak Meadows, pull up a chair with your neighbours, or (hopefully) raise a beer at the PNE. It’s time to turn the city blue and green and cheer on the Canucks to victory while creating fun memories with friends and family.”

While the first round of the Canucks-Oilers matchup takes place tonight (May 8) at Rogers Arena, the first Playoffs in the Park event takes place on May 12 at 6:30pm. Showings will happen for both home and away games, rain or shine.
