UBC Pride is holding a competition for designs for an installation that will go up over their event on September 6.

The Love is in the Air: Pride Installation Competition is open to all UBC students, faculty, staff and residents. Artists who identify as part of the LGBTQ2SIA+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, two-spirit, intersex, asexual, and other non-straight/cisgender identities) are particularly encouraged to apply. Proposals for designs must be submitted by July 28.

The ceiling will cover the event space at Fairview Commons, next to the Earth Sciences Building. It will be installed in mid-to-late August, and will remain until December, technical and weather conditions permitting.

Design submissions for the ceiling will be reviewed by UBC engineers, architects, and public space animators. The winning submission will receive up to $1,000 to install their design, and an additional $2,000 as prize money upon completion.

UBC Pride is an event put on by UBC’s Positive Space Campaign, which aims to make the campus more welcoming toward LGBTQ2SIA+ students and staff. This competition aims to “use art to raise awareness and visibility of LGBTQ2SIA+ communities in UBC’s public space”, according to the contest’s submission information package.

Artists can apply as individuals or as teams. Application packages can be found here.
