There’s a new group of ocean rescuers hitting our screens, set on a BC coastline backdrop.

Debuting on January 14 on APTN (Aboriginal Peoples Television Network), Ocean Warriors: Mission Ready is a 13-part docuseries following four First Nations who have teamed up to form Canada’s only Indigenous coast guard team.

The show is shot in the Ahousaht, Quatsino, Heiltsuk, and ’Namgis nations—the four nations that make up the Indigenous Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary—and follows the highly trained men and women as they prepare to hit the sea for emergencies across their rugged coastline.

“The beauty of these territories and communities cannot be measured, and we are so grateful for this opportunity to share it with a broader audience,” says director and producer Steve Sxwithul’txw (pronounced Swee-thult) in a statement.

Heiltsuk Nation Hereditary Chief Harvey Humchitt adds that “sharing these stories is a significant step in recognizing First Nations people and the role they play in responding to marine incidents.”

The docuseries is directed and produced by Sxwithul’txw and Martin de Valk and written by Barbara Hager (Metis), while Michele Mundy (’Namgis Nation) is the associate producer and production manager.

Ocean Warriors: Mission Ready premieres January 14 at 7:30pm across all APTN feeds.
