Vancouver Talk of the Week: Tenancy law and renters' rights

Finding a place for themselves and their loved ones is a top priority among newcomers to Canada.

For many, that means renting a home.

In B.C., tenants are protected by the Residential Tenancy Act. There are many things that a landlord is not allowed to do under the law. For example, rent cannot be increased more than once a year. And a landlord cannot enter a tenant’s home without written notice.

Tenants, for their part, have obligations. Paying rent on time is one of them.

Emma Lazo is the public-legal-education coordinator of the Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre. This weekend, she will talk about tenancy law and renters’ rights.

Hosted by the Immigrant Services Society of B.C., the Vancouver event will cover updates to the legislation, rights and obligations of tenants and landlords, tenancy agreement, dispute resolution, and legal resources.

The event will be held on Sunday (November 18) at the seminar room in the St. Mary’s School gym (5239 Joyce Street) from 1 to 3 p.m.
