Delight in a comedic reimagined version of “Snow White” this holiday season

This is going to be a little ridiculous—in a good way.

How can the tale of Snow White be told by just two actors and one stage musician? By jumping back and forth between characters throughout the whole play, of course.

Carly Pokoradi, who is one of the performers, switches off with collaborator Katrina Teitz to tell this classic story with a comedic twist.

“We really crack each other up during it, even in rehearsing,” says Pokoradi, “and I’m sure we’ll continue to crack each other up when we’re running it.”

This dynamic retelling of Snow White is being presented by Carousel Theatre for Young People and is directed by co-artistic and managing director Jennica Grienke. While the style of the show may be a little unconventional, Pokoradi says that is entirely the point.

“That’s the uniqueness of this production. Both of us tell the story together, and we both switch back and forth between characters,” she says. “I play all seven dwarfs, I play the stepmother. I play the huntsman and the queen.”

Pokoradi, who has been acting professionally for seven years in the Vancouver area, talks excitedly about the production (opening November 29 at the Waterfront Theatre) and its “fast-paced performance.”

In this retelling of Snow White, written by playwright Greg Banks, the damsel wants to share her side of the story. Both actors take turns playing Snow White at different points. According to Pokoradi, there is constant “finagling and rejigging of the story to represent how she feels the story actually went down.”

Pokoradi and Teitz are joined onstage by sound designer MJ Coomber, who layers the original score with accompaniment on accordion, fiddle, French horn, and mandolin.

For something a little different this holiday season, look no further than this comedic twist on a fairytale classic.
