Buckle in, kids: things are about to get good.

Here at the Straight we’re committed to celebrating and championing Vancouver’s arts and culture scene, which our tiny but mighty team works hard at every day. And we’re excited to take the next big leap in that mission with the announcement of our new monthly concert series in collaboration with the very fine folks at The Pearl on Granville Street.

Highlighting both local and international emerging artists, The Georgia Straight x The Pearl will take place each month in conjunction with the release of our print edition. It all kicks off December 7 at The Pearl with Brooklyn-based experimental pop singer-composer-instrumentalist L’Rain (supported by Lucy Liyou).

L’Rain (born Taja Cheek)’s third album, I Killed Your Dog, dropped on October 13. It’s a dreamy, rich, surprising, and at times unsettling record that explores femininity, expectations, let downs, betrayal, and love. Her breathy vocals hover over complex compositions that range from soft and drawn-out to altogether danceable and catchy.

“I’m envisioning a world of contradictions, as always,” she explains of the record in a statement. “Sensual, maybe even sexy, but terrifying, and strange.”

This is going to be fun.
