Vancouver Classical Guitar Society brings two virtuosos to the stage

There are some things that Vancity just does better. Like classical guitarists.

Vancouver Classical Guitar Society is bringing together two of the best classical guitarists around, and they both just happen live in Vancouver. Michael Kolk, one of the country’s most accomplished soloists, and Anna Pietrzak—a Polish master now living in Vancouver, who founded the Vancouver Guitar Orchestra—are set to join forces for a concert on November 4.

The pair will give their own solo performances, as well as collaborate as a dynamic duo, to showcase the expressiveness of classical guitar music.

“We’ve chosen music that we both love, which tends to feature lively rhythms and strong, beautiful melodies,” say Pietrzak and Kolk in a joint statement. “You’ll hear some Spanish dances by Enrique Granados, ‘Tres Cenas Brasileiras’ by Sergio Assad, a very lively and fun suite, and some pieces by tango master Astor Piazzolla.”

The show takes place at Koerner Hall at the Vancouver Academy of Music, promising to add some flair to a cool fall night. It’s also something of a homecoming for Kolk, who began studying at the school at just six years old. Livestream tickets are also available if you can’t make it out to Kitsilano.

There’ll also be some Polish folk music on the program, adapted for guitar duo by Marek Pasieczny, as well as a movement from Beethoven’s 7th Symphony
