Retro-obsessed French electro-pop alchemist group L’Impératrice will do its part to promote a more global community with a Vancouver appearance on September 20. The sextet—led by keyboardist Charles de Boisseguin—plays Malkin Bowl on September 20, with tickets going on sale March 15 at 10am.

Formed in 2012, L’Impératrice has built a following with a sound that’s been labelled as nu-disco—think a late ’90s chillout tent retrofitted with mirrored balls, strobe lights, and plush bean-bag chairs.

The backstory for the group’s new single, “Me Da Igual”, starts with a broken heart a couple of years back. Looking for an escape from the pain, L’Impératrice took to the road, travelling around the globe, including Europe and the United States.

The takeaway, in the band’s own words, was: “By confronting other languages, other perspectives and territories, L’Impératrice reinforces its own, and definitively breaks down its borders.”

As for “Me Da Igual”, it falls under the umbrella of perfect soundtrack music if you’re having a bad day, month, year, or decade. All you have to do is give yourself over.
