Some well-known names on Vancouver's arts scene are up for JUNO nominations, announced today by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Local men's choir Chor Leoni received the nod for its latest recording, When There Is Peace: An Armistice Oratorio, nominated for Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral category.

Notably, the album was produced on the choir's own label. Commissioned from composer-in-residence Zachary Wadsworth, the oratorio features a libretto curated by playwright Peter Rothstein and Erick Lichte. They drew on First World War poetry and found texts from soldiers recounting the moment when the guns of “the war to end all wars” fell silent.

Joining Chor Leoni for the project was the Borealis String Quartet, Canadian tenor Lawrence Wiliford, soprano Arwen Myers, and percussionists Martin Fisk and Robin Reid.

Elsewhere, in the comedy category, local favourite Sophie Buddle is up for Comedy Album of the Year for Lil Bit of Buddle.

The full list of nominees is here. Singer Alessia Cara hosts the ceremony on March 15, televised on CBC from Saskatoon.
