Le Soulier, Kamloopa, As You Like It, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time lead Jessie Award nominations

    1 of 3 2 of 3

Théâtre la Seizième's innovative Le Soulier, the Arts Club Theatre's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Bard on the Beach's Beatles-inspired As You Like It, and the Cultch's Kamloopa are some of the plays to receive a whack of Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards nominations last night.

Le Soulier was one of the shows that led the way, with eight nominations in the large-theatre category, including outstanding production, outstanding performance, and original script. The all-female celebration of Indigenous women Kamloopa also scored eight nominations.

As a company, the Arts Club received the most nominations, with 16 overall, followed closely by Bard on the Beach. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time led the way with a total of five nominations, including outstanding production; As You Like it received six, Timon of Athens five, and Lysistratat four, including the Critic’s Choice Innovation Award.

The all-female celebration of Indigenous women Kamloopa scored eight nominations.

Pacific Theatre received a total of 10 nominations, with Kim’s Convenience scoring six overall, including outstanding production.

The small-theatre category was more spread, with a total of 23 productions nominated.  Les Filles du Roi, a production by Fugue Theatre/Raven Theatre/Urban Ink/The Cultch, garnered nine nominations, including ones for lead actors Raes Calvert and Kaitlyn Yott and  outstanding direction.  Eight nods went to Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street by The Snapshots Collective. Frank Theatre and Queer Arts Festival’s Camera Obscura (hungry ghosts) received seven, and Circle Bright Productions' The 39 Steps took six. Delinquent Theatre’s Never the Last saw five.

In the Theatre for Young Audiences category, Carousel Theatre for Young People led with nominations, with an equal number of nods for A Charlie Brown Holiday Double Bill and Elephant & Piggie’s We Are in a Play.

Additional awards and prizes will be revealed and presented at the award ceremony on July 15, including the Vancouver Now Representation and Inclusion Award, the Patron of the Arts Award, the Mary Phillips Prize, the Ray Michal Prize for Emerging Director, the Sam Payne Award for the Most Promising Newcomer, the John Moffat & Larry Lillo Award, the Critics’ Choice Innovation Award, and the GVPTA Career Achievement Award.

This year’s 37th annual Jessie Awards will be held at Bard on the Beach in the BMO Mainstage in Vanier Park.   Following the ceremony, the Awards After Party will be held at Beaumont Studios (316 West 5th Avenue).

Immersive Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street took place in an actual pie shop.
