Vancouver Fringe Festival review: One Good Marriage

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Vancouver artistic directors, directors, and theatre patrons take note: Ese Atawo has arrived in town.

In Sean Reycraft’s One Good Marriage, we meet a young couple whose recent wedding was followed by a massive tragedy. Although it loses momentum, mostly because it keeps the precise nature of the tragedy a mystery for too long, the script is a moving exploration of grief, identity, and the need for community.

Dan Willows, who plays the husband in this two-hander, delivers a solid performance, but he tends to intone the script, leaning too heavily into its stylized rhythms. Atawo, on the other hand, is always delicately, subtly, fiercely responsive. She will make you laugh and she will break your heart.
