Ministry of Health reveals top baby names in B.C. in 2019

      As 2019 comes to a close, "Olivia" is topping the charts as the most popular name for babies born in B.C. this year.

      The Ministry of Health announced today that it's followed by Oliver, Lucas, Liam, Ethan, Noah, William, Benjamin, Charlotte, Emma, and Leo.

      The data was collected until December 18.

      In 2018, the most popular baby name in B.C. was Liam, followed by Olivia, Emma, Lucas, Oliver, Benjamin, Ethan, Noah, Logan, and Amelia.

      Back in the 1970s, the most popular baby names were Michael, Christopher, Jason, David, James, John, Robert, Brian, William, and Matthew, according to the U.S. Social Security Administration.

      For girls in the 1970s, the most popular baby names were Jennifer, Amy, Melissa, Michelle, Kimberly, Lisa, Angela, Heather, Stephanie, and Nicole.

      In the 1990s, Michael, Christopher, and Matthew led the pack for boys and Jessica, Ashley, and Emily were the top three for girls, the U.S. Social Security Administration reported.

      Only one of the top 10 boys or girls names in the 1970s or 1990s in the United States—William—cracked the top 10 in B.C. this year.
