She’s one of the most recognizable faces—and voices—of BC journalism, so it comes as no surprise that Global BC anchor Sophie Lui was voted by our readers as one of the top local TV newscasters for 2023. And that’s not the only accolade that Lui has received this year; she was the 2023 recipient of the Shelley Fralic Award by the Jack Webster Foundation, which honours a journalist “who exemplifies Shelley’s legacy as someone concerned with excellence in journalism and making her community a better place.”

Lui uses her voice to support charities including BGC (Boys and Girls Clubs), Cause We Care Foundation, BC Cancer Foundation, and Chinatown Foundation, and spoke out against anti-Asian hate in BC during the COVID-19 pandemic. Which is to say: she’s a badass, basically.
