Arts Stream: Lxdy Parts, Jean Paul Langlois, and Ballet Now

    1 of 3 2 of 3

Though COVID-19 lockdown continues, quarantine isn't stopping Vancouver’s arts scene. Here are some of the top streaming and digital offerings this week.

      THE JOY OF PAINTING

      (May 8 at 4:30 p.m.)

As part of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s ongoing Art Connects Series, East Van–based Métis artist Jean Paul Langlois (shown here) lets us in on his painting process. This should be a treat: Langlois’s large-scale works burst with saturated colour and references to everything from old westerns to ’70s sci-fi and Saturday-morning cartoons. Lxdy Parts: Lockdown Edition!

      (May 8 at 8 p.m.)

After Party Theatre hits Facebook Live as part of #CanadaPerforms, with performances by Kaitlyn Yott and Pippa Mackie. The comedy-theatre show has scorched its own boundary-breaking path as part feminist cabaret, part satirical sketch comedy, and part provocative storytelling format. You'll remember this crew from that time you laughed your fool ass off watching their show The After After Party at the 2016 Fringe.

Good Things to Do builds an immersive dreamscape at Rumble.

      GOOD THINGS TO DO

      (May 9 and 10)

Having sold out last weekend's performance, Christine Quintana, Molly MacKinnon, Sam MacKinnon, and Mishelle Cuttler are back for an extended run, via Rumble Theatre. Together, they invite you to place yourself in a dreamscape, using live and recorded sound and unexpected use of technology. This is an interactive show truly designed with isolation in mind. Tickets are here.

      VSO@Home Mother's Day Concert

      (May 10 at 2 p.m.)

Christopher Gaze, of Bard on the Beach, hosts a virtual chamber concert, with a program that spans George Frederick Handel's Trio sonata for two violins and basso continuo in G minor and Eternal Source of Light Divine, from Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne, as well as VSO member Marcus Goddard's Vocalise. Goddard himself appears on piano and trumpet, as well as violinists Yi-Zhou and Cassandra Bequary, and Greg Caisley on continuo and organ. And yes, fittingly, it's a family affair: also on hand, Angela Goddard on violin, Jasmine Goddard on guitar, and Jordana Goddard lending her soprano voice to the virtual concert. You can find it here.

      Ballet Now

      (Streaming now, at VIFF)

Dance fans who need a fix amid the COVID crisis won't want to miss the chance to stream this behind-the-scenes look as New York City Ballet prima Tiler Peck, as she directs and dances in the prestigious BalletNOW program at the Music Center in Los Angeles. Her mashup of tap, hip-hop, and more show, as she puts it in the doc, that "ballet is more than pink tights and a tutu". It's more than just a trip into gorgeous, technically sharp dance, though: the documentary also shows the incredible pressure that goes into building a show on tight timelines. You can rent it here.
