A new board game from a Victoria-based publisher aims to teach children about colonial history in Canada.

Produced by Medicine Wheel Publishing and developed by Bear Clan member James Corbiere, The Truth in Truth and Reconciliation Educational Board Game invites players to actively engage and participate in learning about Canada’s treatment of Indigenous people.

The game focuses on the experiences and views of Indigenous people residing on Turtle Island, and provides pedagogic examples of systematic racism and colonization. Suitable for ages 14 and up, it sees players take turns collecting Truth and Consequence cards that outline the complexities of colonialism—and how the understanding of land, language, culture, and Indigenous identity is deeply tied to moving towards reconciliation.

There is also an accompanying graphic novel illustrated by Corbiere, and a curriculum guide by Indigenous educator Kristy McLeod (making it great for schools).

The Truth in Truth and Reconciliation Educational Board Game releases August 13 and is available for preorder now.
