Vancouver’s best cafes and coffee shops: Chinatown/Strathcona

Dry markets, secret clubs, and hidden cocktail bars dot the multicultural enclave of Vancouver’s Chinatown, but a few of our favourite coffee shops can also be found in this neighbourhood. Here are some not-to-miss locales to grab a cup of java and some treats.

      Dalina

Touted as a taste of Italy in Chinatown, Dalina offers up finely-crafted espresso drinks and some specialty grocery items to take home. Dailly brunch is available at this location, including the BBQ brisket croissant and the simple breakfast plate.

      Mello

Yes, this is a donut shop—and yes, the donuts are melt-in-your-mouth delicious. But Mello, which also has a location on the west side, makes a really great Americano. You heard it here first.

      Propaganda Coffee

If Propaganda’s cute little robot mascot isn’t enough to entice you, the coffee offerings surely will. With beans from popular roasters including Phil & Sebastian, Transcend, Pilot, and Monogram, you can truly find your perfect cup here—along with an amazing magazine selection to browse.

      Finch’s Market

The sister location of Gastown’s beloved Finch’s Tea House, Finch’s Market follows its mother cafe’s focus on understated elegance. Fresh baguette sandwiches and espresso beverages are the go-to items here, along with curated pantry goods to take home.

      Hunnybee Bruncheonette

A spot as sweet as its name suggests, Hunnybee Bruncheonette (little sibling to The Birds & The Beets in Gastown) is a clean, quaint coffee and brunch spot that straddles Strathcona and Chinatown. Along with delicious espresso, the cafe serves up elevated but unpretentious breakfast all day—like the sweet and savoury ricotta pancakes, shakshuka, and a classic breakfast sandwich. At night, it doubles as a dining space for pop-ups Thank You Pizza and Taqueria Chicatana… but more on that another time.
