With the acclaim given to 2015's Ninth Floor and the canonization of her 1994 debut Double Happiness on CBC's The Filmmakers, Vancouver-based Mina Shum has been on an almighty roll.

Her latest triumph: the Vancouver International Film Festival announced today (August 15) that Shum's newest feature, Meditation Park, will open this year's festivities with a gala screening on September 28.

Legendary actor Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Arrival's Tzi Ma take the leads in a film described as "a bittersweet comedy" set inside Vancouver's East Side and Chinatown. Don McKellar and Shum's Double Happiness collaborator Sandra Oh round out the impressive cast.

In a media release, VIFF Executive Director Jacqueline Dupuis stated: "As we think about our dedication to this monumental event, this Vancouver-based story by audacious filmmaker, Mina Shum, honours family, tradition, community and the unique culture of our city. It is certain to create a sense of pride for Vancouverites and touch the hearts and minds of all those who have an opportunity to experience it."

Here's a clip from the new film, which is also set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival in September:
