After becoming a staple in New Westminster for more than 10 years, Fratelli European Bakery has announced it will be shutting down on June 1.

“Six months ago, the landlord in New West informed me that he would be putting the building up for sale, and unfortunately I received some terrible news on Boxing Day,” owner Marco Cornale posted on Instagram. “It was confirmed that the building in New West was a done deal and sold.”

The new building owners will likely turn the location into a dentist’s office, he was told.

Cornale isn’t planning on opening another location in New West, he said, instead focusing all his attention on Fratelli’s first location, which opened on Commercial Drive in 1997. He plans to open that daily once the Sapperton location closes down, and add food delivery services to their offering.

“I want to thank the community of New Westminster and surrounding areas for making the bakery a part of your beautiful community,” Cornale said. “I have loved having my second location there. So many friendships with neighbours and customers were developed over the years. We have made so many cakes over the years for many of your occasions.”
