Ranbir Kapoor shines in Bachna Ae Haseeno

Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Minissha Lamba, and Deepika Padukone. In Hindi with English Subtitles. Rated PG.

Bollywood romancers of the past, with their conservative, straight-laced heroes and virtuous heroines, get a heavy dose of reality in Bachna Ae Haseeno (Watch Out Beauties). In this film, India’s new-age Lotharios live by the western credo of “Why stop at one woman when you can have a different one every week?”

Newcomer Ranbir Kapoor (Saawariya), who comes from the illustrious Kapoor clan (which is even more storied than the Barrymores of Hollywood), plays video-game designer and babe magnet Raj. He’s a fuck-’em-and-leave-’em kind of guy who sucks big time at breaking up and shuns commitment like a hooker at a bachelor party.

Raj’s major conquest at age 18 is Mahi (Minissha Lamba), a sweet, innocent Sikh girl from Punjab. Mahi and Raj meet while vacationing in Europe. It’s an episode that pays tribute to 1990s romancer Dilwale Dulanya Le Jayenge, in which a hero also named Raj charms a young Indian woman vacationing in Europe and fights to reclaim his true love despite her family’s objections. But this Raj is no Bollywood fantasy. Mahi suffers the cruellest of heartbreaks.

Raj’s next victim is the svelte and sexy Radhika (Bipasha Basu), who has come to Mumbai to be a Bollywood starlet. Again, it’s wham-bam, thank you, ma’am; Raj takes off to Australia and leaves Radhika crying on their wedding day.

But all this cruelty finally catches up to Raj, who meets his match in Gayatri (Deepika Padukone), a Sydney taxi driver–cum–business student who breaks his heart, sending him on a journey of self-correction.

The entire young cast, led by a star-making lead performance by Kapoor as the heartbreaker who finally fesses up to his sins, is topnotch. Despite minor flaws in the story, the excellent song-and-dance numbers keep it entertaining. This is a fresh portrait of young India that is a real break from the past.
