When the Gallery Café and Catering at the Vancouver Art Gallery (750 Hornby Street) announced its closure in the spring, it came as sad news for loyal patrons who frequented the 25-year-old dining spot.

Its outdoor patio was a hidden gem for locals, and was especially busy during lunch hours for city-dwellers looking for a quick and hearty meal.

But its replacement is almost ready to debut.

1931 Gallery Bistro is gearing up for its launch at the historic art destination, and will feature seasonal, rotating menus inspired by local flavours.

Both dine-in and takeout options will be available, and guests can expect to find everything from breakfast to brunch, and lunch to dinner options. Catering for parties and private events will also be offered.

Some of the menu items include blue-chia seed pudding, fresh pastries, duck confit-and-roasted fennel quiche, charcuterie boards, braised B.C. short ribs, roasted cauliflower steaks, as well as a long cocktail list.

Various menus will be available, as well as eat-in and takeout options.

With more than 70 seats inside the soon-to-open bistro, as well as a summertime patio, we don’t doubt it will be packed with hungry diners.

The name of the new eatery pays tribute to Vancouver Art Gallery’s debut in 1931. It will showcase a contemporary interior design by Frank Architecture and Interiors, complete with exposed concrete and white walls.

"The gallery is excited to be hosting the new bistro. Ever since the Vancouver Art Gallery opened in 1931, it has presented works that are both local and international with a strong sense of place, contributing significantly to the long-term legacies of Canadian culture,” Marie Dickens, associate director and chief operating officer at the Vancouver Art Gallery, said in a press statement.

“The Vancouver Art Gallery provides amazing experiences for our audiences and with 1931 Gallery Bistro, is able to offer guests with the best of British Columbia's culinary culture,” added Dickens.

Stay tuned for more details on the new bistro’s opening date.
