Where to get vegan baking in Vancouver

We’re in our era of grabbing sweet little treats to get us through the day, and plant-based eaters deserve to join in.

While pastries usually involve lots of butter, dairy, and eggs, a few Vancouver bakeries showcase that vegan baking is not only readily available, but also incredibly tasty.

To Live For, a testament to the growing popularity of vegan baking, is owned and operated by local foodie Erin Ireland on Nanaimo Street. What began as a small venture selling a few baked goods at other cafes has now blossomed into a thriving bakery of its own. Check out the lemon loaf—a tried-and-true favourite made with coconut milk and bits of millet for added crunch—or the drool-worthy croissant cube.

      Plates by Payts

Serving 100 per cent vegan sourdough doughnuts, Plates by Payts has developed a cult following online and is primarily available via pickup through pre-ordering. The donuts are fluffy and Instagram-ready, whether loaded with toppings or filled with custard cream. These sweet treats are worth planning ahead for.

Operating out of the same commercial space as Whisk Matcha, Level V in Mount Pleasant is a completely plant-based bakery with internationally-inspired offerings. French-style macarons and eclairs? Chinese pastries and mochi muffins? Check and check—Level V has you covered.

For unique vegan offerings, check out Bonus Bakery: an entirely plant-based operation on Industrial Avenue. Bonus Bakery sells various tall-tiered cakes, including tiramisu and carrot cake, and its version of Dunkaroos called Dipper’z: a pack of mini cookies with a buttercream sprinkle dip.

      Purebread

If it seems like Purebread is taking over, it’s because it is. What was originally one location in Whistler has now expanded to eight locations throughout the Lower Mainland (including a brand-new one on West 4th), serving savoury and sweet offerings baked daily. Worry not, vegans: Purebread offers a plethora of plant-based treats, such as a Blackout cake covered in chocolate buttercream and toasted cake crumble, and an array of delicious scones.
