ICBC woes

Had my car destroyed at 4am by a drunk new driver that had his BCDL less than five months. Now ICBC is finding a way to screw me: I cannot replace my car for the money they offered me. We as taxpayers and customers have no recourse or rights and nothing will happen to new driver from another country because of no fault insurance, and I’m the one left holding the bag. I can’t even recoup the money I’ve put out because of this. ICBC is a complete joke of a system. Only in BC do you pay money to get screwed over. Thanks for nothing, ICBC, your system is broken and needs to change.

Here's What I Did

This happened to me awhile ago. Other driver's fault, though she was not drunk. When I had the damage assessment done, it came to about $5000. My car was old (Blue Book value approx. $4000) so ICBC said it was a write-off. The thing is, my car was in TIP-TOP condition and ran like a clock. It's still running like a clock today because I take care of it.

I tried to explain that I couldn't find a replacement car of the same quality for the $4000 write-off and I wanted the car fixed. They refused. I used my powerful charisma to gently explain that a lawyer might see it differently and named a lawyer specializing in ICBC claims. I just looked up this guy on the internet... no idea who he really was. As soon as I said that, they agreed to repair the car.

Use your powerful charisma and they will obey. They obeyed me.

Please understand that in David Eby's British Columbia, people who work hard enough to earn personal property - even a car - are considered "problematic". If you contribute to society, you are the "enemy". Good luck resolving your issue.

replacing cars for value has always been an issue for ICBC. injuries, and other things have changed under the new laws, but unfair car prices for used but well running beaters, family cars and cars in general has always been a screw job.

To talk to a lawyer. It might cost some money up front but can be well worth it.

My Neighbour

Bought a 20 year old Ford F150 pickup with 220,000 kms for $4k, but needed a lot of work.
When he went to transfer it they said it was worth $15k, and had him pay taxes on that $15k instead of $5k. Thievery.
But then some new driver ran a light and wrecked it, and what do you think they offered him for it- $15k or $5k?
