The premise behind National Health and Fitness Day is to “make Canada the fittest nation on Earth”. In the era of COVID-19, the 2020 version will be celebrated by a range of virtual workouts.

Happening Saturday (June 6), the event features a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), a Tik Tok dance challenge, an obstacle course for families, strengthening workouts, and more, all via your screen.

It’s all to encourage Canadians to “get up, get out, and get active”, even while social distancing.

“In past years we’ve held events all over the country, and obviously we couldn’t do that this year. So we’ve taken everything online. Whether it’s Zumba or a boot camp or a yoga class, now everybody will be participating remotely,” Pierre Lafontaine, chair of the NHFD, said in a release.

Exercise Is Medicine Canada, the YMCA, Fitness Industry of Canada, MoveCollective, ParticipACTION, and the Canadian Paralympic Committee are among the participating organizations.

“With devices these days, kids sitting inside watching screens, all the sedentary behaviour associated with video games, we’ve been getting progressively less active and that has led to an epidemic of obesity,” Olympic champion skier Nancy Greene, one of the leading voices behind NHFD, said in the statement. “There is no silver bullet to fixing obesity, but we do know that regular exercise has a multitude of benefits. That’s why campaigns like this are so important.”

To sign up for any of the free events, visit NHFD.

If doing your own thing outdoors is more your speed, that’s encouraged too; whatever gets you moving.

Whether you’re in your living room or out on a hiking trail, post a photo of how you’re celebrating National Health and Fitness Day on Facebook @nhfd.ca or on @NHFDcan and tag #NHFD2020 #GetActiveCanada.
