The late Carl Weathers was a former BC Lion

Perhaps best known for his career outside of British Columbia, one-time Vancouverite Carl Weathers died on February 1.

The 76-year-old actor and former NFL and CFL player was once a linebacker for the BC Lions—holding a post on the team from 1971 to 1973, after playing for the Oakland Raiders in the years previous.

During his tenure as a BC Lion, Weathers started booking film extra gigs, appearing in Good Times and television crime-drama Starsky & Hutch. Those roles led him, ultimately, to a bigger career in film and television, later being cast in Rocky, Predator, Happy Gilmore, and most recently, The Mandalorian

According to his family, Weathers passed away “peacefully in his sleep” in his Los Angeles home. A cause of death has not been shared.

Paying homage to his character, Chubbs, in Happy Gilmore (which was shot in Vancouver), we’ll be raising a beer to Weathers today.
